ShareShift vs ShareGate
The same five workloads as ShareGate Migrate Essentials, at half the price, with three workers instead of one machine, unlimited concurrent jobs instead of one at a time, and a migration you can pause and resume.

ShareGate Migrate is a good product, and the people who buy it usually renew because moving off it feels risky. This page is for the moment the renewal quote arrives. ShareGate Essentials is US$5,995 a year for one machine activation, one migration at a time, one client organisation, and the five collaboration workloads: SharePoint, Teams, Planner, OneDrive and file shares. Exchange mailboxes, Google Workspace, Entra ID and Purview labels sit in the Pro tier at US$9,995.
ShareShift covers those same five workloads for $2,995 a year, or $499 a month with no commitment. Every plan includes three workers, each running as many concurrent jobs as it can hold, with unlimited data. There is no workload gating between plans, and there is a 30-day free trial of the full product so you can run both tools on the same site and compare the reports.
What each tool gives you
| Area | ShareGate | ShareShift |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | SharePoint, OneDrive, file shares and Teams. Insane mode uses the Migration API but falls back to Normal mode for managed metadata columns, document sets and ASPX pages, and on that path list version numbering restarts at 1.0 whatever the source said. | File shares, SharePoint Online including lists, columns, content types, pages and navigation, OneDrive, Teams and Planner. Versions, authors and timestamps preserved, list item version history included with its original numbering; managed metadata copied with every term identifier kept, so the column values still resolve. |
| Pause and resume | Not supported. ShareGate's FAQ states migrations cannot be paused, resumed or reverted, only cancelled. Incremental runs copy new or modified items afterwards. | Every step is persisted. Pause, stop, schedule and resume on the same worker or a different one, with incremental re-runs that keep version history. |
| Pricing model | Essentials US$5,995 a year, Pro US$9,995, Enterprise US$17,995. Per machine activation: 1, 5 or 25. Multi-year discount of 10 to 15 percent. No monthly option. | $499 a month or $2,995 a year per organisation. Three workers included, extra workers $500 a year each. 15 percent off multi-year. |
| Concurrency | Essentials: run one migration at a time. Pro: up to five. Enterprise: up to 25. Tied to machine activations. | Unlimited concurrent jobs on every worker. Workers register with a lease, so replacing a machine never needs a support call. |
| Teams | Channels, files, tabs, apps and Planner. Conversations go to an HTML Message history tab, 50 most recent by default (500 via PowerShell); reactions, link previews and mentions are lost. Private chats disabled since May 2026. | Standard and private channels with conversation history, authors and timestamps, chat archives, and Planner. Written into the channel rather than an HTML tab. |
| MSP licensing | One client per subscription. Consultants must purchase a new subscription for each client. | MSP plan: ten client organisation slots and ten workers for $7,995 a year, with per-client and white-label reports. |
| Data caps | Unlimited data and workloads within the licensed organisation and its subsidiaries. | Unlimited data on every plan, including the trial. |
| Deployment | Desktop application activated per workstation. | Worker-only. Workers run inside your network and push straight to Microsoft-provided containers in your destination tenant; our licence server sees aggregate counts only. |

Where ShareGate is stronger
ShareGate has had more than a decade to broaden its sources, and some of that breadth we do not attempt. If any of these is central to your project, use ShareGate for that part.
- On-premises SharePoint Server sources: 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and Subscription Edition. ShareShift's launch sources are file shares, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Teams and Planner.
- Google Drive and Box as sources (Box through PowerShell on Pro and Enterprise).
- Exchange Online mailboxes, Google Workspace mail and calendars, Entra ID identity copy and Purview sensitivity label mapping, all in the Pro and Enterprise tiers.
- Nintex workflow and form migration within Nintex's own support boundaries, and SharePoint 2013 workflow moves.
- A mature PowerShell module with Copy-Content, Import-Document and WhatIf pre-checks.
- 24/7 premium support on the Enterprise tier.
The parts that made people look for an alternative
- Worker-only: content never passes through our cloud, and we are never a processor of it.
- Pause, stop, schedule and resume on any worker, with incremental re-runs that keep version history.
- One flat price per organisation, unlimited data, three workers, from $499 a month with no commitment.
- Lists, columns, content types, pages and navigation, not just documents; Teams private channels and chat archives; Planner.
- Pro at $4,995 a year: eight workers and three organisation slots, half of ShareGate Pro.
- Ten client organisations under one $7,995 a year MSP licence.
Questions people ask before switching
Is ShareShift really half the price of ShareGate?
ShareGate Migrate Essentials is US$5,995 a year. ShareShift Annual is $2,995 a year (US$2,995 list) with three workers and unlimited concurrent jobs, and there is a monthly plan at $499 for short projects, which ShareGate does not offer.
Can I import my ShareGate projects into ShareShift?
No. ShareGate project files are not importable. User and group mapping CSVs can be reused, and because ShareShift re-runs are incremental it can be pointed at a partly migrated destination and will copy only what is new or changed.
Does ShareShift migrate Teams conversations?
Yes. Channel conversations are written into the destination channel with authors and timestamps, with private channels, files, tabs, Planner and chat archives. ShareGate writes conversations to an HTML tab limited to the 50 most recent, and has disabled private chat copying since May 2026.
What happens if a migration fails halfway?
It resumes from the last persisted step. ShareGate's own FAQ says its migrations cannot be paused, resumed or reverted, only cancelled, which is one of the most common complaints in public reviews.
Does the trial have the same limits as the paid product?
No limits beyond time. The 30-day free trial is the full product with three workers, every workload and unlimited data. card taken at checkout, not charged until day 30 is required and the key is issued from the portal the moment you sign in.
We are an MSP with many clients. How does licensing work?
The MSP plan gives you ten client organisation slots and ten workers for $7,995 a year, with additional slots and workers available. ShareGate requires a separate subscription for each client.
