ShareShift vs AvePoint Fly
AvePoint Fly is priced per user and sold on quote. ShareShift is priced per organisation, published on the website, and runs entirely on machines you control.
30-day free trial, full product, card taken at checkout, nothing charged until day 30. Prices below in USD; change currency.
AvePoint Fly comes in two shapes. Fly Server is licensed with what AvePoint's own brochure calls one universal per-user price regardless of the source, with zero data caps. The SaaS edition is also priced per user or per data volume. In both cases the number is not published: you ask for a quote, describe your tenant, and wait. That is fine for a large enterprise with a procurement team. It is slow for an IT manager who wants to move a file server this quarter.
ShareShift takes the opposite approach. The price is on the pricing page: $499 a month with no commitment, or $2,995 a year, for one organisation, three workers, every workload and unlimited data. The number of users in your tenant does not change it. The 30-day free trial is the full product, issued from the portal with your card on file but nothing charged until day 30 or a sales call.
What each tool gives you
| Area | AvePoint Fly | ShareShift |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | Broad source coverage is claimed in AvePoint's materials. We have not verified item-level fidelity for SharePoint lists, pages or Teams, so ask AvePoint for a scoped demonstration on your content. | File shares, SharePoint Online including lists, columns, content types, pages and navigation, OneDrive, Teams with private channels and chat archives, and Planner. Versions, authors and timestamps preserved. |
| Pause and resume | Not stated in the published materials we checked. Ask specifically whether a job can be stopped and resumed on another machine. | Every step is persisted. Pause, stop, schedule and resume on any worker, with incremental re-runs that keep version history. |
| Pricing model | Per user. Fly Server: one universal per-user price regardless of the source, zero data caps. SaaS: per user or per data. Figures not published; quote only. | Per organisation. $499 a month or $2,995 a year, three workers included, extra workers $500 a year. Published, no quote needed. |
| Teams | Listed as a supported workload. Conversation handling and private chat support not verified by us. | Standard and private channels with conversation history, authors and timestamps, chat archives and Planner. |
| MSP licensing | Per-user pricing scales with each client's headcount; partner terms are quote-based. | MSP plan: ten client organisation slots and ten workers for $7,995 a year, regardless of how many users each client has. |
| Data caps | Fly Server: zero data caps per AvePoint's brochure. SaaS: may be priced per data volume. | Unlimited data on every plan, including the trial. |
| Deployment | Fly Server is installed on your infrastructure; the SaaS edition runs in AvePoint's cloud, so content passes through the vendor's service. | Worker-only, always. Workers run inside your network and push straight to the Microsoft-provided containers in your destination tenant. There is no hosted edition and never will be. |
AvePoint facts from cdn.avepoint.com (Fly Server user SKU brochure) and avepoint.com/pricing, checked September 2026. AvePoint does not publish prices; nothing above is a quote. ShareShift prices exclude tax.
What it costs, with the numbers shown
250-user organisation, one year of SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams
- Per user, quote only: AvePoint does not publish a figure
- Multiply their per-user price by 250, plus any SaaS data charge
- Budget only after the quote arrives
- Annual: $2,995 a year
- Three workers, unlimited concurrent jobs, unlimited data
- Or three months of Monthly: $1,497 in total
We do not invent a number for AvePoint. If you have a written quote, put it beside the ShareShift figure and the comparison is immediate.
MSP with ten client organisations
- Per user across every client's headcount
- Ten quotes, or one partner agreement on quote
- Cost rises with each new client
- MSP plan: $7,995 a year
- Ten client slots and ten workers included
- Extra workers $500 a year each
Where AvePoint Fly is stronger
AvePoint is a large, established vendor and there are situations where its model is the better fit. In fairness:
- Very small tenants with very large data: with a per-user price and zero data caps, a 20-person firm with terabytes of content may pay less per user than a flat organisation licence.
- A hosted option: AvePoint offers a SaaS edition for buyers who want the vendor to run the service. ShareShift deliberately does not, because we will not be a processor of your content.
- Enterprise procurement: quote-based pricing suits organisations that need negotiated terms, and AvePoint has the sales structure for that.
- Source breadth we have not verified: AvePoint's materials list more sources than ShareShift's launch set of file shares, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Teams and Planner. If you need an unusual source, confirm it with them.
The parts that made people look for an alternative
- Worker-only: content never passes through our cloud, and we are never a processor of it.
- Pause, stop, schedule and resume on any worker, with incremental re-runs that keep version history.
- One flat price per organisation, unlimited data, three workers, from $499 a month with no commitment.
- Lists, columns, content types, pages and navigation, not just documents; Teams private channels and chat archives; Planner.
- Pro at $4,995 a year: eight workers and three organisation slots, half of ShareGate Pro.
- Ten client organisations under one $7,995 a year MSP licence.
Questions people ask before switching
Why does AvePoint not publish prices?
Per-user pricing makes a public price list hard, because the final figure depends on headcount and sometimes data volume. AvePoint's brochure describes one universal per-user price for Fly Server; the amount is available on request. ShareShift prices per organisation, so the figure can sit on the website.
Is a per-user price ever cheaper than ShareShift?
It can be for very small tenants. ShareShift Annual is $2,995 whether you have 20 users or 20,000, so the per-user cost falls as the tenant grows. For a few dozen users a per-user tool may be cheaper; from a few hundred users a flat licence usually wins.
Does ShareShift have a hosted or SaaS version?
No. ShareShift is worker-only: the application runs inside your network, authenticates as an app registration you own and pushes content directly into Microsoft-provided storage in the destination tenant. Our licence server holds aggregate counts, never content or item paths.
Can I try ShareShift while I wait for an AvePoint quote?
Yes. The 30-day free trial is the full product with three workers and unlimited data, card taken at checkout, not charged until day 30. Most people can migrate a real site or team within the first hour and compare the reports.
What if I have already bought AvePoint licences?
Finish the workloads you have paid for and use ShareShift for the rest. Because ShareShift re-runs are incremental, it can be pointed at a destination that another tool has partly populated and will copy only what is new or changed.
